Buyreggae once again is delighted to present another essential selection in their Dubmusic Re-issue Series. On offer is a talent charged album courtesy of the genius dub master Hopeton Overton Brown otherwise known as the ‘Scientist’ but also sometimes called ’The Dub Chemist’. The audio engineer managed to pull contributors on The Scientist - The People’s Choice that read like a master list of Jamaican musicians to include the virtuoso duo of Sly and Robbie, Jackie Mittoo, Tommy Mccook, ‘Flabba' Holt, Leroy Sibbles, Lloyd Parks, ‘Style' Scott, ‘Santa' Davis, ‘Gladdy' Anderson, Ansell Collins and Lloyd Chalmers just to name a few. The album was recorded at Channel One backed by the sought after studio band Roots Radics but mixed at King’s Tubby`s studio. Roy Cousins produced the album and published the original on the Kingdom Records Label in Britain in 1983. The selections on People’s Choice is designed to rock the dance with heavy baselines and allows the listener an uninterrupted observation of pure rhythm. It also features many dancehall anthems from the Studio stable.
Brown was born on 18 April 1960 in Kingston, Jamaica. He displayed prodigious talent for electonics during training from his father, a television and radio repair technician to the point where he was able to build his own amplifiers at a very early age. He was baptized ‘Scientist’ when Bunny Lee commented to Tubby, with regard to his technical proficiency, that "Damn, this little boy must be a scientist."
Scientist's reputation as a groundbreaking master recording engineer grew and he rose to fame in the 1980s mixing experimental dub versions. His contemporaries included several notable figures such as Bunny Lee, Philip Smart, Pat Kelly and Prince Jammy who worked at King Tubby's studio and helped to pioneer the dub genre in the 1970s. Barrington Levy’s hit ‘Collie Weed’ was one of the first tunes to use Scientist’s top notch engineering skills for the prolific producer Henry 'Junjo' Lawes. The two together produce hit after hit at the time. Eventually, he left to work at Channel One with the Hoo Kim brothers working with a 16 riddim track compared to King Tubby’s 4. In 1982 he left Channel One to work at Tuff Gong studio as second engineer to Errol Brown.
He released on Greensleeves Records several titles with fantastic themes surrounding his prowess where he fought Space Invaders, Pac-Men, and Vampires, always winning. Roots Radics, Band, riddem makers extraordinaire and Scientist collaborated on many of his mixed albums. Buyreggae’s Soulrebel new earthy artwork for the re-issue aptly fits the roots and source nature of the tracks.
